3 Tips for Handling an Auto Breakdown Emergency
Even with the high levels of automotive technology today, vehicle breakdowns are still inevitable. No one knows when their vehicle will break down or where they will be when it happens. When it does happen, it is unexpected and most people are not prepared to handle it properly. Many become confused because they do not know what to do next. Therefore, here are 3 tips that will assist you in making the right moves when your car breaks down on the road: 1. Move your vehicle to safety Unless your vehicle comes to a complete stand-still when breaking down, it is important to move it as far away from the road as possible. To ensure you and other motorists are safe, it is better to move your vehicle to the far side of the road or to the emergency lane of the freeway. If your car does completely break down on the spot, try pushing it out of danger’s way with the help of other people. Throughout the entire process, be sure to keep your hazard lights on to notify other motorists that your vehicle is not in motion. Once you have moved your vehicle to safety, make sure you and all other passengers wait for help in a safe location as well. This can be inside the vehicle if it is in a safe spot. 2. Call for help immediatelyIf your car is blocking traffic or you feel unsafe, you should call 911 as soon as your car breaks down. This way, help can quickly be on the way. If you are on the freeway, you will be given priority and a unit will be sent to take care of the situation as well as direct traffic. When driving, it is a good idea to have a means of communication with you, such as a cell phone. This way, you can call someone immediately whenever you are in need of help. Otherwise, you will need to find the nearest available phone, which is not always an easy task. 3. Find out your exact location It is important to know exactly where you are because it will be easier and quicker for the help to arrive. Therefore, it may be a good idea to have a map or GPS system handy at all times. Also, check for landmarks when travelling long distances so you can give an even better idea of your location in break down situations.
